Schutzmannschaft
Schutzmannschaft ( abbreviated Schuma ) or Hilfspolizei ( abbreviated Hippo ) is a police battalion aide collaborators whose members are drawn from the local police occupied countries in East Germany . This unit was formed to fight the resistance movement arising in these countries . Hilfspolizei also refer to the German police unit helper ( if in Indonesia banpol name ) . There is also a Danish corps HIPO in the occupied country .
The term has even been known of since 1933 , and is used to name the units formed by the Nazi government in that year , and its members are the ones most SA or SS . But then the organization disbanded in the same year due to international protests .
In the new territories occupied East Germany , Hitler reiterated what he had done in 1933 in terms of utilizing the local police forces ( and now without any more protest outside world ! ) . The volunteers were called to Hilfswillige ( Supplementary ) by the Germans , and sometimes simplified by the name " Hiwis " . Those who imitate the shape Orpo / Ordnungspolizei ( Police in charge of maintaining security ) is called with Schutzmannschaft ( Protective Detachment ) and the number could reach hundreds of thousands !
Schutzmannschaft battalions grouped by nationality , such as Poland , Ukraine , Belarus , Russia , Estonia , Lithuania , Latvia and Tatars . Each battalion has a strength of about 500 people . Everywhere , the local police number is far beyond the German personnel who have the same position . For example , in the region there are 26 Brześć Litewski gendarmerie Germany while his aides Belorusianya numbered 308 people . In the district there are 73 Baranowicze German gendarmerie and 816 local helpers . On July 1, 1942 has been established 18 ½ Schutzmannschaft Ukrainian battalion , with an additional three battalions were formed in Belarus that its staff are mostly people of Ukraine .
Local police units is given greater autonomy in the occupied countries to fight the partisans or gather the Jews . Along with the increased German casualties on the Eastern Front , the SS formed a new army divisions in Ukraine , Latvia , Lithuania and others whose members are mostly drawn from the volunteers " veteran " of this .
Wikipedia mentions that Schutzmannschaft become an important component in terms of the destruction of the Jews . In places such as Zhitomir , Korosten , Kherson , Kakhovka , Uman and many others throughout Ukraine , local militia was formed as part of a team of executioners .
