So scarce , the photos on this joint submarine crew was only two ! Finally I found one site www.collectinghistory.net the story is about the U - boat with captain , Nikolai Kapitänleutnant Clausen . There are no photographs of combat patrols or even photos of U - 182 . Just be advised , the U -boats met his death while on his way home from his first patrol !

U - 182 is a submarine type IX D2 . First launched on 7 April 1941 by AG Weser , Bremen , and begin to charge dated June 30, 1942 by captain is Kapitänleutnant Nikolai Clausen , a holder of the Knight's Cross ( Cross Knight or Knight 's Cross ) .

As with any other U -boats , submarines fighter program has a motto , which is " Westward ho ! " The old German handwriting style and is located at the front of the conning tower ( conning tower ) .

It turns out that U - 182 is not the only one who wears this motto . Noted there are 3 other U -boats were poor across the ocean with the famous motto of the ancient Viking stuck in his body . In addition , this motto is also used by the pilgrims and the first settlers were exploring the western United States . While we make everyday eating tempeh and watching soap operas Marshanda , this motto is totally stuck in the brain !

The first U - boat that is proud to put this motto is U - 37 . after his first patrol , when U - 37 entered the base at Wilhelmshaven dated 8 November 1939 , the commander Werner Hartmann met with his old friend Nikolai Clausen in the dock . When Clausen was still serving as the commander of the minesweeper M - 134 . they then had dinner together and Hartmann promises there will ask Clausen as officers guard (watch officer ) in the u - boat lead. When the task as a u - boat crew is regarded as a prestigious and honored so many people who want it . Understandably was , in times of glory u - boat early in the war , they are easy to just sink the enemy ship for decades without being detected at all ! When U - 37 returned to duty , his crew began to write their submarine conning tower with this slogan with black paint . For some reason they did not write the words the more ' top spot ' sort of Chu - x or semisalnya !

Shortly thereafter , Clausen replaces Hartmann as commander of U - 37 . Clausen himself so impressed with this slogan so when he transferred to the U - 129 , he still put up the same motto . Likewise with Hartmann , who still put up the motto of the U - 37 when he served in the new boat , U - 198 .

From June to November 1942 , U - 182 submarines served as joint training flotilla ( small u - boat fleet ) 4th . after this period , the U - 182 was transferred to the 12th Flotilla in Bordeaux to begin to live a real combat mission .

Dated December 19, 1942 U - 182 departed leaving Horten , Norway , to patrol the area in the waters of the South Atlantic / Indian Ocean .

In this first patrol U - 182 with an impressive record of achievement sank 5 ships with a total tonnage of 30,071 tons . The ships are :

Courage Ocean British-owned ship , sunk dated January 15, 1943

Llanashe British-owned ship , sunk dated February 17, 1943

Richard D. Spaight ships belonging to America , sunk dated March 10, 1943

Aloe British-owned ship , sunk dated 5 April 1943

Greek-owned ship Adelfotis , drowned dated May 1, 1943

Dated May 16, 1943 around the island of Madeira is the na'as for this submarine where he turns sunk by depth bombs ( depth charges) which was launched aboard the Destroyer USS MacKenzie of American-owned . All humans who are in it ( 64 people ) perished with the ship , including the captain , Nikolai Clausen .

In addition to the crew above , there are also three prisoners who were in the U - 182 at the time drowned . The prisoners consisted of two captains and at least 1 engineer . Although before had died , the U - 182 has menggelamkan 5 ships , but there is a command that only captains qualify enemy alone gets ' honor ' captive in the u - boat , while the rest are usually allowed to board lifeboats to the chances of survival are thin . In this case , Captain Angus MacLennan from British steamer " Aloe " ( sank on April 5, 1943) and the captain of the Greek steamer " Adelfotis " ( sinking dated May 1, 1943 ) were selected for captivity .
