Flying bombs are designed to support suicide attacks carried out by Leonidas Squadron during the Third Reich . Volunteers are trained on a regular gliders to give them the feel of flying without an engine , and then progressed to a special plane with shortened wings that can dive at speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour ( 190 mph ) . After this , they are developing with R - II dual controls .

Training began in RI and R - II with satisfactory results where they were able to land back though with some difficulty . The aircraft handled well , and it is estimated that the Leonidas Squadron will soon be using the machine . Albert Speer wrote to Hitler on July 28, 1944 and said that he was opposed to the waste of men and machinery to face the Allies in France and suggested it would be better to use them for power generation decimated Russia .

flight Test
The first real flight was performed in September 1944 at Larz , which dropped from a Heinkel 111 Reichenberg . However , then the flying bombs crashed after the pilot lost control when he threw the canopy . The second flight the next day also ended with a crash , while the subsequent flight tests conducted with test pilot Hanna Reitsch and Heinz Kensche . Reitsch itself experienced some crash - landing , although he survived unscathed ! On 5 November 1944 in the second test flight of R - III , wing falling due to vibration and Heinz Kensche managed to open a parachute to save himself , though with some difficulty because of the cramped cockpit .

cancellation
When Werner Baumbach was appointed as commander of KG 200 that mysteriously in October 1944 , he was assigned to form a powerful unit to support multiple Reichenberg Mistel project . He and Speer eventually met with Hitler on March 15, 1945 and managed to ensure that suicide missions are not part of the tradition of the German soldiers , and later on also Baumbach ordered the Reichenberg unit to be disbanded .
