Jerry cans Fuel / Water Wehrmacht in World War II
By : Alif Rafik Khan
In November 1936 the Wehrmacht issued the invitation to tender for the manufacture of sealed storage container model fuel and water ( jerry cans ) to replace older models made of tin and also as a complement of motor units were newly formed .
Müller firm of Schwelm under the direction of head Vinzenz techniques Grünvogel (1905-1977) developed a revolutionary new design jerry cans in his time .
With a rectangular shape and is made using two plates held together by welding wrought in the middle part of the piping so as to ensure protection from shocks , then the new jerry cans with a capacity of 20 liters and a weight of 4 kg was introduced . She comes with three attached handle and can be opened and closed with a round - key . Handle design enables four empty jerry cans can be held by one person who holds the outer grip , and two jerry cans filled with holding the handle contains the middle. Special shape also makes him able to be stacked up to five pieces in storage . Synthetic orange - red paint smeared in hot conditions which make it resistant to rust jerry cans , while a small pipe attached to the stopper powerful enough to hold back the liquid out while being charged .
Production started in early 1937 in cooperation with the firm AMBI - BUDD Presswerk of Berlin which provide tools manufacturer. Since 1938, Nowack Bautzen joined Müller and ABP for the manufacture of " secret weapon " , which carefully camouflaged existence in war missions Wehrmacht 1938-1939 ( annexation of Austria , Czechoslovakia and Poland ) . This kind of new bobbed Canister openly and in large- scale campaign to French and German Countries Down 1940 . From the moment that started production varies depending on the manufacturer , while the model copied by the state brutally friends and enemies !
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------
EARLY MODEL 1937-1941
The first model is equipped with a cross -shaped amplifier to avoid changing shape / dents . He has a marking that consists of ( top to bottom ) :
- Kraftstoff 20 L " 20 liters of fuel " ( forged or painted ) ,
- Feuergefährlich " flammable " ( forged or painted ) ,
- Year of manufacture ,
- Logo Maker ,
- Number that its usefulness is unknown ( the supplier code for jerry casing made of metal ? ) ,
- Some models have the marking " Heer " ( forged or painted ) . Its function is not known , whether to prevent theft or simply differentiate with other units rations .
STANDARD MODEL 1939-1945
Final shape of the Wehrmacht jerry cans appeared in 1939 . Fundamental difference with the previous model is a form of reinforcement " X " is more complicated , resulting in the removal markingnya location . Marking is generally the same , except that the words " Heer " was changed to " Wehrmacht " , which indicates that each of the branches ( Heer , Luftwaffe , Kriegsmarine , Waffen - SS ) can become the owner of the jerry cans . The entire handle is no longer welded to facilitate the process of mass production . Standardization effort to make this German-style bring some alternatives that appear in the field : the lack of markings on the side ( and some even placed in the handle ) ; the absence of the words " Wehrmacht " and the accompanying numbers ; as well as the manufacturer's logo placement location is different . In addition , the number 20 is painted red ( the weight in kilograms of a jerry can filled ) often come look . Own dimensions exactly the same as the previous model .
Color is commonly used to jerry can is " feldgrau " ( gray field ) , " schwarzgrau " ( dark gray , commonly referred to as the panzer gray ) , and " dunkelgelb " ( dark yellow ) . The latter is fairly rare used for the first model .
MODEL FOR AIR 1940-1944
The success of the first version of the model of jerry cans and two jerry can make special models produced water reservoir in 1940 . Do not forget that the soldiers are not the only part of the military units that need water ! Wehrmacht motorized divisions that are large ( average of 15000-20000 people ) , especially those who are placed in hot climate areas , requires large quantities of water in order to cool their war machines . This new model of jerry cans are not equipped with the old marking Kraftstoff and Feuergefährlich , and replaced by " Wasser " ( water ) and a large white cross as a marker of contents jerry cans . In addition , there is also a black Waffenamt stamp , number '24 ' in red ( the weight in kilograms of a jerry can filled ) , and a ' W ' which is painted white . Some variations of course also appear on the field , just as jerry cans of fuel . An example is the marking on the handle and sometimes stamped on the body instead of jerry cans . Own dimensions with the exact same model of fuel .
